How to Unblock Your Mind and Clear the Fog Of an Overwhelming Emotion
We are spiritual beings learning how to be human, so, go easy on yourself if your emotional and mental wellness isn’t 100% on target. Nobody’s is, and those who claim it to be are simply putting on a brave, public face.
We all have a public and a private face. Last week my partner and I had an argument and then had to meet friends. We were not faking it when we turned up totally happy, enjoying each other and laughing and chatting with everyone. However, the second we walked back home, it all changed again. This is natural, not fake. It’s the duality of nature. There’s two sides to everything and everyone. So, lets start this advisory article by saying that: you are worthy of love no matter what you’ve done or not done, at least at a spiritual level.
We learn to be human by making mistakes, facing challenges, being hurt, hurting and in many ways through trial and error. It’s easy to buy a book and try to fit the mould of a Christian, a Moslem or jew, or Hindu or Buddhist. But that’s really your public face and the more one sided you become about yourself the more likely you’ll be giving yourself hell in private. Only then, your partner and family get to see the “other side.”
Corporations have codes just like those of religions. Moral and ethics books they call culture and values. These keep your public (at work) face in check but have little or no respect for the consequences this one sided public face at work might drive as the opposite at home.
So, lets begin with a few easy suggestions:
To prevent your mind becoming funky or blocked or even overwhelmed with emotion, is far easier than a fix. So, lets lay track in the realm of prevention first:
THE FUTURE ..By far, the greatest influence on cause and cure of mind funk is the future. When the future is in doubt we become funky. Doubt creeps into every corner of our heart and we become what is clinically called, depressed. Depression is future funk. When we doubt we are in the right skin, job, family, country, sport, suit, shoes, world, or even car, we can become totally funked.
This is the key role of a performance coach. To make sure on one side that you don’t get ahead of yourself. On the other side to make sure you stay 100% committed with conviction that you’re on track to your dreams, goals, and visions.
These visions must be believable and so, the path you set to your vision needs to be set clearly. This is the responsibility of your mentor coach to keep that path clear, pull weeds, put hand holds and keep you focussed.
Funk is human and the solution is to evolve. You can do it.
We need an identity. We need answers to explain why things happen us. We need an inner compass that can guide us with humanitarian certainty, and we need a way to be that allows us the freedom to want the best and yet has the utmost humility to enjoy the journey. All the current systems of self-leadership, personal development, religion or spirituality fail in one or more of the above.
What is the new, powerful and relevant spirituality?
It is nature. A mix between the consciousness of our impact on the planet, our personal balance across all areas of life and our commitment to be great.
But, and it’s a big but, it is our thinking that matters most, not just the awareness of nature and the environment we surround ourselves with.
On one of my many explorations of the Himalayan wisdom, I took four entrepreneurs with me. There were mountains and birds and monasteries and great energies but the whole trip was filled with share portfolio talk. This meant that the entrepreneurs were there in body but not in thinking. In my language, they didn’t turn up for it.
Presenteeism, the ability for someone to be at work, do their job and go home at night without really turning up, is one of the fastest growing problems in business economics. Diet, exercise, relationships, thinking, opportunities and world crisis are just a few of the many variables that can create a chaos in the mind to cause presenteeism. Nature provides the order in that chaos, therefore, it is relevant, beautiful and powerful.
Thinking in tune with nature means thinking in step with life. It’s a presence that can and always has for the millennia it’s been known, a way to live in harmony while achieving. It keeps you mind body and spirit healthy. It explains the order in the chaos, it helps you to take the wheel and drive the bus by clearing the fog.
My coaching is progressive. I demonstrate the universal laws, the principles of nature, then, over time, apply them to all walks of life. It’s a balance that can be sustained, feels right and prioritises goals without compromising your humanity, heart or love.
This is the future of the global community, a way to integrate diversity and yet, accept individuality. A way of thinking that can calm nerves before they get stressed. It’s prevention rather than cure and an asset for those who choose to stay one step ahead in life. It also solves problems at the source.
The 30 day Back on Track program is designed to be an introduction to the thinking that turns chaos to order through an understanding of nature’s laws. We understand the new philosophy of learning and so apply this by offering online content for self paced awareness with daily working calls to help with application. We have extended workshop one on one sessions to fully embed the mindset. This is for those who choose to stay one step ahead in life, using prevention rather than cure for life challenges and solving problems at the cause rather than wasting time dealing with effect.
Life is full of challenges. The path to any great achievement is paved with speed bumps. Navigating those speed bumps is called success. The one important discovery that life brings in later maturity, is that every single speed bump you've faced has been faced by tens of thousands of people before. In other words, your life is not as unique as you think.
Take my partner Lotte for example: she's training for the Olympics, and feels extremely isolated as she runs her training load for up to 6 hours a day. Yesterday, two hard time trials on the bike, 1.5 hour hard sprint session plus her daily gym, cooking and relationship time with me. She feels, in some ways, like a pioneer. But her nutrition coaches, running coach, technique coach, physiology coach, masseuse, endurance coaches, swim coach, bike team coach, psychology coach, performance coach and I all know that everything she is facing has been faced millions of times before by wannabe Olympians. Some have given up but others have, by following the routine without emotion, arrived at the opening ceremony of the Olympic games, and achieved their dream.
Lotte is wise to distance herself from negotiating those challenges. She's hurting, burning, worried about style, keeping to the heart rate (between 150 and 180 bpm for up to 4 hours training a day) and getting recovered ready for the next huge load, within 12 hours of the last. Getting past doubt, uncertainty, disappointment, frustration, challenges, style shifts, and gear failures cannot distract her. Hence, the coaches are collaborating to create an unbeatable team around her. (by the way, she needs a sponsor who will win a huge opportunity to brand their business with run, swim, ride images, stories and achievements for a few 000$).
My journey is similar to Lotte but in life and business. I didn't have the gift of wisdom she has to use coaches. I blazed my own trail. I went to the Himalayas 55 times to learn what a coach already knew. I went through relationships to discover what a coach already knew. I won and lost sporting events to discover what every sport coach could have shared. And I busted my back doing what any physiology expert would have predicted. I have had depressions and heart breaks that could have been foreseen by a reasonable performance coach.
What's the difference between Lotte and I in the coaching world? Why didn't I have the wisdom to use coaching? Answer.... EGO.
Ok, that's a big simplification but I grew up being bullied by a father who was very strict and a step mother who between bouts of alcoholism didn't have my best interest at heart. So, I chose to be antidisestablishmentarianism - a radical, a renegade and a free spirit in the world. I wouldn't change it, I love my life and the experiences from it, but if you ask me the difference between coached and not, I'll simply put it down as COST.
My road cost time, money, energy, love, effort, pain, that, as it turns out, is pretty much the most precious things we have in life. I paid a high price for my success, Lotte is paying, but her track is straighter, and therefore her targets are coming faster.
I chose to become a coach to help people, executives, sports people, indigenous communities and youth, get to their dreams goals and visions with less of those costs. Sure it costs money, but that, in retrospect, is far cheaper than experience.
Life is too short to learn form experience so why not learn from other's experience?
A coach needs to have grey hair.
Your body and your mind are intimately connected. Mind power must be viewed in collaboration with your physical and spiritual wellbeing. Ultimately, it's hard to do good if you don't feel good. Your body is nature's bible, you can tell what is going on and needs to change in your thoughts from your body.
To think is to live. The freedom to think. The freedom to feel. Nobody can take it from you. Even in prison. But few people can control their mind.
Emotions are not the dominant driving force of life. They come from the mind that is not in control. When emotions dominate it is such a loss of opportuntity. All those who have made good, in sport, healing, business and love have learnt to control their mind and therefore their emotions.
There are those who have lost control and medicate to survive. We call those medications the 4 substitutes and you have learnt from me, what they are. To recap:
Food and substance (most particularly sugars, drugs, caffeine and alcohol)
Greed and it’s partner, depression
Sex, and it’s partners, envy and imitation.
Spirituality and the ignorant desire to escape reality (all seven areas of it) and be somewhere else
Life, no pill can create it, no meditation can escape it.
Mind control puts you in the driver's seat of your life.
1. Realistic Expectations: If you are going to play in the world it's wise to have a realistic expectation of what makes the people on it go around and around.
2. Cause and Effect: So much of life can be mastered if you learn how to work on cause rather than effect - simple things make the biggest difference.
3. Know what you want - When you want it and How you are going to get there.
4. Never let your mind, emotions and physical appetites rule your heart.
These four are the most powerful insights. Easy to apply. An Asset to own.
Listen to this man and his inner dialogue overriding his outer dialogue. He demonstrates the greatness you have to believe you have. You can translate his ideas
Have you ever experienced a moment in life when everything seemed to stand perfectly still. A moment walking in a busy street, sitting by a lake, playing with the kids in a park, kissing your lover? Those accidental moments do no have to be accidental. You can have them anytime you choose when you know how. But first, we need to overcome any resistance to it.
It's easy, when defeated by circumstances in life, to revert to a defensive mode of being. In such states it feels like we are always trying to get back to "somewhere we lost." Often, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. We start hearing things through a filter and that filter spins everything into a "self sabotaging" mindset of defence or attack to disprove the pre-scripted interpretation of life's incidents.
X came to me with a series of "bad luck" stories. He was wanting change but had also joined a support group for his pain, diagnosed as PTSD (post traumatic stress) from a violent incident. During his 30 days in the incubator (30 day challenge) he broke the mould of "bad luck" thinking and started to see the journey as "normal" rather than broken or messed up. This is a key. We are all on the same track and there's no avoiding the road bumps, pot holes and punctures we get along the way.
As you can see from the diagram below, the final home stretch of the Back on Track loop is Self Reliance. This is the most challenging component of the Back on Track™. Here in Self-Reliance, we come to see that the future, the past and the present are completely painted with the belief pattern we have about people, (past and present) - incidents we've experienced (past, present and imagined) and the beliefs we've collected (inherited, learnt, experienced or read). At this stage of Back on Track, there are no victims and where we are, is where we've chosen to be.
The Future - Planning Perfect Moments.
An airline pilot goes to a simulator and trains long and hard before being given the pilot seat to take an plane filled with passengers into the sky. But we don't. We often live life by "shoot, ready, aim" instead of "ready, aim, shoot." In other words, we often live by experience rather than by the ambition for moments of perfection.
The pilot metaphor is useful. My experience is that if you get ready for a new role in life, the new role will come to you. In other words, when the person is ready, the job offer will appear. All too often a person in a stressed space will start thinking about a new job, new company, thinking that their new space, new job will not have the stresses of the old. This is a myth. New jobs have stress, but maybe there's a honeymoon period before it's experienced.
The role of "back on track" is to not only bring you up to scratch in your current occupation, but take you way beyond into preparation for the future. An incubator for your future self. I've outlined some of the key variables in this process below.
Ultimately, if you are waiting to see it, before you believe it, you'll be waiting forever.
Consciousness of living and the power of emotions or the lack of them.
The modern era of shining iPhone screens, zero hour contracts, the threat of nuclear armageddon and continued global poverty can challenge your personal resilience. But you can turn this around by turning to nature and rekindle the art of imagination, dreams to restore your strength and vitality
One of the themes that emerges from my international clients is that people feel increasingly depleted by everyday life and work, and it’s getting worse.
Compare the pressures you face in a typical week with a few years ago: have they increased? Now think about the years ahead: are the pressures likely to keep growing? If you’re answering 'yes', this could be a good time to review and renew your strategies for resilience.
I've spent my life exploring how people can raise their wellbeing and resilience through contact with nature.
To help this, I've travelled with groups to Nepal's Himalayas, to the Everest region and the Sir Edmund Hillary National Park, a conservation area, at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. I've been running a range of events for individuals and work groups exploring resilience and natural happiness.
Time in Nature
A book published in 2012 by two doctors from Harvard Medical School quotes many research studies showing how long hours in front of screens put people in a continual state of alert, which makes it hard for them both to concentrate, and also to relax.
The book, "Your Brain on Nature," also provides plenty of evidence that time in Nature is one of the best antidotes to losing that precious enjoyment and resilience needed for a good quality of life.”
My programmes offer a range of ways to learn from Nature. An important part of most of these events is some solo time out amongst the trees, on a mountain path or by an ocean or lake, giving people a chance to relax, and open to fresh insights about the issues that they’re facing.
Nutrition for future growth
Alongside this, I created a model, the Back on Track Program, which shows how people can learn from the resilience of natural ecosystems, lead better, feel better and do better simply by alignment with natural process. The Universal Laws of Nature.
Many people feel helpless about problems, and simply stuff their worries down. “I find that these deep, denied worries affect a lot of people, and sap their energy and resilience. I offer a range of processes, such as discard, VIP and Innerwealth using deep ecology, to help people face these anxieties, and find a more positive outlook.”
Daring to dream
One of my inspirations in this area is the experience that the way to positive change for the state of our world begins with visions, imaginations and dreams. Dreams, in the sense of inspiring visions, and myths, in the sense of prevailing beliefs, have a huge influence in our world.
I'm optimistic about the future, because I believe that the wisdom of planet earth, can team up with the inventiveness of humans, to find solutions even to the current threats.
You could look at it as a chance for humans to grow dramatically in resilience, and in their connection with Nature. We have to dare to dream: if we can at least carry a vision of the future we hope for, it starts to gather momentum.”
I provide organic growth approaches for people and their work that help to build resilience. This is backed by many years’ experience of working with mindfulness, deep ecology and other approaches to wellbeing, and is part of the natural advantage.
If you find yourself bouncing between self confidence and doubt, it's probably because you've got the Unlucky Fkr mindset stuck in your thinking. Simply this means you're living in hope that you'll find a partner, job, health, financial plan, spiritual teacher that will create for you an all upside lifestyle.
Understandable in a way because that's what sells. We buy pleasure over pain, right over wrong, good over bad in the hope of eliminating the downside of things. Sadly, it's a hope that can't be met by reality and will probably make you frustrated, angry and at worst, depressed.
In contrast, Lky Fkr builds realism into life thinking and therefore eliminates the frustration over things that don't go to plan.
I've argued against fixed cultural measures inside organisations - academic models of human good behaviour that are constricting and claustrophobic. But rarely have I demonstrated how those cultural brain washing process are also, Xenophobic.
Sexual diversity is no more about men and women than molecular structure is about protons and electrons. They are totally mixed and confused by the topic of gender which in itself is an emotional myth and based on horrifically antiquated ideas about physicality.
Going to the heart of human consciousness, the paradigms that are sold in human development promote gender separation by appealing to either the masculine or feminine aspects of being human which, in essence, splits people into preference between one of the two innate aspects of being a whole person.
We may be defined by our sex, gender or preference, but within us all, by the decree of the universal laws of nature, we are both. We must be:
But when we prefer peace over war, creating over destroying, good over bad, we partition ourselves and so begins the root of self doubt and self abuse. To say the least, and all mental health issues have their root in this so often unquestioned realisation. Create and destroy are two sides of one coin, the art of being human.
This is consciousness. I don't pretend to serve this meal to those who are unconscious and wish to stay that way in polarised antique thinking. For those who are ready no words are necessary, for those who are not, no words are possible. Consciousness means transparency and when we say transparent, we mean to take the full brunt of dealing honestly with causation rather than dance with effects. All too often, human development plays into the hands of the unconscious mass, trying to promote a jaundice view of what it's like to be a real human being.
It goes to the heart of my discussions about culture and change. Compliance to corporate culture models and expectations of management is 100% essential. However, ownership of your total self is a completely different topic. I hope that comes through clearly here.
We must each be accountable. We must take ownership of both our creative (want what we haven't got) and our destructive (want what we've got), feminine and masculine sides and detach these from the language of "male" and "female" - outdated definitions of who we are and how we live, happily, in love and with success in this wonderful world.
We know the value of rising above something. We love the mountains, we love looking down at the order in things. It's humanly natural to want to see life from a lofty height. But this is not just a mental or physical experience. It's spiritual as well.
When we see order in chaos, we are totally in control. It's about predictability, safety, comfort and control of the future. Order in chaos means, helicopter mindset.
There are many ways of detaching yourself from something, many of which involve some sort of emotional or physical separation. An "I don't care" attitude, or "I'm over it" headspace. But this isn't really the experience of rising above something, it's more akin to an imprisonment of hiding from it.
The helicopter mindset puts you in the driver's seat. It gives you complete control of a situation both personal and professional. It certainly changed my life, being able to see the order in the chaos made living in the real world a totally conscious experience.
I used to meditate on a cushion, but now, life is my meditation. Now I see order in life, rather than have to escape it to an old, somewhat outdated Eastern practice. Try it. I think you'll find, like me, that it can make the process of living in the moment a beautiful one. Totally inspired and, it can make your moods much smoother, given that you're more likely to act rather than react.

The world has been struggling for many years to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy behaviours. Religions, cultures, values and ignorance have even been introduced to try to separate the divide between healthy and unhealthy.
Ultimately, nature provides the answer. Healthy grows you, nurtures your soul, feeds your desires and satisfies your need to feel confident about your destiny. Unhealthy shrinks you, feeds your ego and satisfies your short term fears.
It may be wise in the future to look at human development from this perspective because much of what is done in the name of good corporate development, and the behaviours that result, are based on unconscious models of human development.
Distill the complex. Integrate the fragmented. Align your body, with your mind with your heart. Know which of the three is running your life.
I’ve climbed many mountains in the Himalayas of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. I’ve led groups up there over 50 times in 35 years - and in doing so, I’ve been paid to lead people into serious danger (almost 500). When you lead people into danger, and get paid for it, you get to know people pretty well. You learn what makes for good and bad self management, especially at the top. In this short article I’d like to share some of the discoveries I’ve made and distilled during these 35 years as explorer, behavioural specialist and trek leader.
For those of you out there in busy ness land, I want to make it really clear what I'm offering with the 30 day coaching.
I offer you a new and more profound way of looking at your life. I provide you with a leading edge methodology, a life advancing process, and a high achievement formula, that helps you create significant changes in your attitude to, and actions in, life. I am also here to help you learn how to change any stressful situation you might encounter into a blissful condition, or experience. The result will be that you will learn how to experience more moments of love, gratitude, certainty and presence in your life. You will learn how to act from a greater state of vision, inspiration and purpose, the result of which is a feeling of wisdom, maturity and poise.
When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and your discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.
This week it has been drilled home to me over and over again that what we think causes what we live. There's just no use blaming your job or spouse or financials for your mental state. It's rubbish. You choose your thoughts, even if you don't choose the circumstances you're in.
So, all life is associated with thoughts and the key thoughts you can have are self respecting.
Nobody treats you better than you treat yourself so, if you're not getting the sex you want, question whether you're treating yourself as someone's toy, or not.
Heart and soul at work differentiates you. And without heart and soul at work you become a robot that will be replaced first chance someone gets to do it. It's a simple piece of math, if you are not separated from what you do by how you do it, your job is on the line.
Heart and soul means:
1. You're on purpose..
2. You're on values
3. You're turning up
4. You're caring about others
5. You are balanced, centred and calm.
If you'd love to know more about differentiating yourself, please give me a call.
